5 shiny stars on this one!
This is the second book in the Laura Caxton series and is obviously a vampire tale. I appreciate that these are good, old fashioned, murderous vampires creating chaos and terror in their wake. It was a rather short read coming in at 295 pages.
The novel itself is written in two timelines "present day" and American Civil War era. I must admit the formatting used to interject the Civil War timeline was a bit of a challenge to read especially when coupled with old English spelling and grammar. It did get easier as I read on and added so much to the backstory of this novel and the entire series.
There was a lot of violence and vampire gore here, but nothing I would consider gratuitous; everything seemed well edited to move the story along at a good clip.
I love the main character. She is a kick ass female state trooper who was pulled into the world of vampire hunting in the previous novel, 13 Bullets. In this novel we really get some more insight into her personality, insecurities and all. I was also pleased that there are no romantic sub plots to take away from the mayhem.
As for the twist at the end....never saw it coming, but it has cemented my commitment to finding the rest of this series!
On to the next!
